Do I have to provide evidence of my past criminal record when applying for a job in the states?

I'm an American citizen and I lived my entire life outside the states. I want to apply for a job in the states but I have one criminal conviction. Do I have to disclose it or can my potential employer require me to provide evidence of my past criminal record even if my conviction is from a different country outside the US?
