Vietnam War Soldier Question?

Yes I will ask alot about ww2 and vietnam, because im interested and may like to buy some things or pick up habits. If you look at G.I Soldiers from the vietnam time, they all or mostly all have like these braceletes or wrist bands. They look like hippy stuff, or stuff from another area. Like strings or bands. In the movie Platoon you can see Elias wearing some bracelets and also hippy lookin necklaces.
