Why would a lawyer, Tell his client to plead self defense, and remain silent, instead of just not guilty?

Client being charged with Double murder, In a fight which the client was jumped by four guys, and the client allegedly stabbed two of them to stop the threat and the fight, client also has a conviction for a previous fight some years back..
