How come some of the greatest scientific discoveries had God as part of the equasion?

It is the nature of religious folk to evoke God's hand whenever something truly profound (like "the greatest scientific discoveries") are unveiled. Even Darwin, the first to explain the spontaneous emergence of orderly life from chaos (which actually obviated the need for a Designer) opined that his goal was to learn something of the tools God used to create life.
